The river draws the Tatilmerkezi Stork’s route through Brisbane. Glass buildings on one bank, outdoor pauses on another, with art, gardens and views from the water along the way: there is plenty to enjoy without rushing between distant stops. For a first visit, we suggest three days shared between South Bank, the city centre and Mt Coot-tha. Keep two distinctions in mind from the beginning: the airport train has separate fares, and downtown City Botanic Gardens is not the botanic garden at Mt Coot-tha. This guide builds a comfortable city plan around those practical differences.
Places to visit in Brisbane
South Bank: outdoor time and a swimming break
Think of South Bank as a main area in which to slow down, rather than a long checklist of compulsory stops. Streets Beach, Boat Pool and Aquativity are free to use during operating hours. Lifeguards patrol during those hours, and facilities can close because of weather, visibility or safety conditions. South Bank Keep swimming as an adjustable part of the day.
For a family visit, plan towels, dry clothes and a proper meal break. Adult supervision remains essential even when lifeguards are present. If you are not swimming, an outdoor pause can still work before a cultural visit. Consider whether you will need to carry wet clothes or return to your accommodation before the evening: two nearby activities can involve more practical steps than a map suggests.
QAGOMA: follow an interest rather than a checklist
General entry to Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art is free, including most exhibitions and programmes. Some special exhibitions and events require tickets, so check the particular programme you want. The Children's Art Centre is also free. QAGOMA Focus on a collection or exhibition that interests you instead of treating a quick passage through the buildings as the objective.
If an indoor afternoon suits your trip, choose the day around the current exhibition programme. Consider the amount of time you actually have before purchasing any additional ticket. Children and companions with different interests do not necessarily need to see every section at the same speed; a meeting point and agreed break can make the visit more relaxed.
City Botanic Gardens: a green pause downtown
City Botanic Gardens is the central riverside garden, with access from the Alice Street area and nearby bridge connections. It is a different destination from the gardens at Mt Coot-tha. Brisbane City Council Build it into the city-centre day with time to sit, look and take photographs, rather than using it only as a shortcut between other destinations.
A river journey can provide the second main part of this day. Choose where to board, where to leave the boat and what you want to explore on foot afterwards. Planning an intentional section is more useful than travelling to a distant final stop and only then working out the return. If what you want is a quiet view, a break on the riverbank is another worthwhile choice.
Mt Coot-tha: distinguish the gardens from the lookout
General entry to Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha is free. Visitor information, maps and transport details help you choose a manageable route through the grounds. Brisbane City Council Select a few areas that appeal to you instead of trying to cover the entire garden. For photographs, move from a wider garden scene to plant details rather than collecting many near-identical views.

The wider Mt Coot-tha precinct includes the lookout and reserve tracks, with the botanic gardens at the base. Brisbane City Council Sharing a place name does not mean the connection is an easy walk for every visitor. Compare the distance and gradient with your requirements before choosing a walking or transport link. Visiting only the garden or only the viewpoint can also form a satisfying main outing.
A three-day Brisbane itinerary
| Day | Main plan | Optional addition |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | South Bank and a selected QAGOMA visit | Swimming or an outdoor break if conditions permit |
| 2 | City centre, City Botanic Gardens and the river | A CityCat trip to a deliberately chosen terminal |
| 3 | Mt Coot-tha gardens or the lookout | A second stop in the precinct if time and energy allow |
On arrival day, use the relaxed part of the first row and move the gallery to another day if needed. With an early flight arrival, establish the accommodation's check-in time and luggage arrangements in advance. Before tying a more distant outing to a morning reservation, work out the complete transport route. Leave some evenings without a fixed appointment you have to race back to.
Getting around: Airtrain and CityCat
Airtrain is a separate airport operator with its own fares. Do not automatically apply the city's ordinary public-transport fare to the airport section. When transferring from Airtrain to other Translink services, the usual transfer rules do not carry over in the same way. Translink Compare the complete journey to your accommodation, including the final connection, rather than just the first train ride.

The river network includes CityCat, peak-period Express CityCat and Cross River services. Current council information describes CityCat and ferry services as paid transport; do not carry older advice about a free CityHopper into a present-day plan. Contactless tap-on and tap-off payment options are available. Brisbane City Council Check that the particular service stops at your intended terminal before boarding.
Accommodation and meal areas
For a South Bank-focused trip, begin comparing accommodation around that area; for a downtown-focused visit, start with useful central transport links. Put cancellation conditions, breakfast, luggage storage and the journey home at night beside the room price. A riverfront address does not establish that every stop on your itinerary will be within an easy walk.

West End has cafés and dining spread along several streets, including the Montague Road area. Visit Brisbane Consider it as a meal neighbourhood that can fit your interests, rather than a separate hunt for famous restaurant names. Check the chosen venue's own menu and opening arrangements. A general district guide cannot promise a particular dish, live performance or available table.
Walking, access and photography
Give every outdoor day a place to rest in shade and a nearby indoor alternative. If walking distance is a concern, consider gradients, terminal access and the final section from the stop to the entrance as well as total kilometres. Access on a boat or inside a gallery does not demonstrate that the whole day suits your needs; confirm the particular service or route you require.
For photographs, make the river part of the story rather than a repeated background: look for the relationship between bridges, waterfront activity and transport. Concentrate on details in the gardens and permitted areas in galleries. Choose a place to pause without blocking paths, so composing the photograph does not interrupt other visitors' movement.
Three different frames for the river
For a small photographic story about Brisbane, begin with a wide frame bringing water and city together. Use the second for the steel lines of Story Bridge or activity along the bank, then show a CityCat making its way through the urban setting. Morning or evening light can change the mood, but keep the weather and return journey in the plan. Three different city details tell a more interesting travel story than five almost identical views of one bridge.

Connect a West End meal to the day’s route
If a West End meal follows your South Bank day, identify the street you want and the way back first. The district guide points to cafés and varied dining, while each business’s menu, cuisine and hours need their own check. A substantial lunch might sit better alongside a shorter gallery visit; if dinner is the main event, choose a lighter daytime stop. Before reserving a table, agree what the group wants rather than making the decision entirely around a view.
Brisbane with children or limited time
For a family visit, treat outdoor time and swimming at South Bank as a main activity, including time for changing clothes, resting and eating. A family interested in art might give QAGOMA the longer part of the day instead. With only two days, concentrate on the river and centre without making Mt Coot-tha compulsory. A third day gives the gardens room to set a slower pace. Before departure day, decide on the airport connection and terminal: a final photograph is more enjoyable when it does not turn into a rush to collect luggage.
Frequently asked questions
How should I use three days in Brisbane?
A South Bank and culture day, a central river day and a Mt Coot-tha outing provide a balanced introduction. Extend the part you enjoy and remove another stop if your interests point in a different direction.
Are the two botanic gardens in the same place?
No. City Botanic Gardens is downtown beside the river; Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha is a separate destination. Plan transport using the full place name and correct address.
Does my urban transport budget cover the airport train?
Calculate the Airtrain fare and onward connections separately. Do not assume that ordinary city fare conditions apply to the airport journey.
