Below our wings lies Antalya: winding Kaleiçi streets, a generous pause beside the water and ancient cities that open another chapter. My favourite route idea here is to give the coast and history their own space. Let us follow the old town on day one, slow down at Konyaaltı on day two and choose Perge or Aspendos for day three.

This Antalya travel guide starts from the city centre. If you are staying in another resort area, move the starting point on your map before judging a journey. A beach holiday may need just one Kaleiçi day; a city break can give the ancient sites a separate outing. Let the route follow your pace.

Current access: Antalya Museum and Perge

On 1 October 2026, the official Antalya Museum page listed the museum as closed. We have not established a reopening date, so a visit is not included in this itinerary. Müze Türkiye Perge, by contrast, is listed as open, with its ancient theatre temporarily closed for restoration. Keep those two access details separate when planning. Müze Türkiye

General site admission and access to a particular building are different questions. Reconfirm with the operator if one specific monument is the reason for your journey. A saved summer timetable should not be assumed to apply throughout the year.

Kaleiçi: from historic streets to the coast

Hadrian's Gate, Hesapçı Street and Hıdırlık

Use the route from Hadrian's Gate along Hesapçı Street towards Hıdırlık Tower as a starting framework. The municipality's cultural map describes that historic connection and the coastal viewing terraces in Karaalioğlu Park. Antalya Büyükşehir Belediyesi Branching briefly into side streets and returning to the route turns the walk into more than a journey between two landmarks.

Give architectural details some time in the morning and leave a later part of the day for a break by the coast. Doors and street perspectives make good short photo stops; respect occupied houses and private courtyards. Account for slopes and changing surfaces. If you walk down to the harbour, include the return climb in your walking allowance.

Everyday life at the Ethnography Museum

Antalya Ethnography Museum occupies two Ottoman mansions in Kaleiçi, with displays about local life, crafts and Turkish-Islamic objects. Müze Türkiye The closure of the large archaeology museum does not mean every museum option is closed: this is a separate institution with its own visitor arrangements.

Pick a theme such as home life, weaving or everyday tools. Afterwards, see whether a detail in the streets makes more sense in light of what you have learned. For children, selecting one object in each room and discussing its use can be more engaging than reading every label.

Planning a Konyaaltı coast day

Konyaaltı combines public beach areas and beach businesses. The municipality describes much of the shore as fine pebbles, with some sandy sections. Antalya Büyükşehir Belediyesi If swimming is your priority, choose an access point and the facilities you need. A coastal walk, however, does not require committing the entire day to a beach business.

First decide what sort of day you want: a long swim break, a brief visit to the sea or a walk along the shore. Consider loungers, umbrellas, showers and food as separate costs. Make swimming decisions according to the conditions and local instructions on the day; a beach you remember as calm may feel different on another visit.

A proper break in the middle of the coast day also makes the evening easier. When travelling with children or someone with particular mobility needs, consider the entire journey from the hotel to the water. A nearby point on a map may involve steps or a longer final walk. Discuss individual access requirements with the facility you choose.

Choosing between Perge and Aspendos

Perge: understanding the layout of a city

At Perge in Aksu, colonnaded streets, baths and water structures offer a framework for imagining urban life. Focus on the open parts rather than expecting access to the theatre. Following the relationship between a street, water feature and public space can be more satisfying than stopping only at the largest ruin.

Aspendos: theatre architecture and aqueducts

Aspendos near Serik is known for its Roman theatre and aqueduct system, with further city remains on the hill behind the theatre. Antalya İl Kültür ve Turizm Müdürlüğü Make it your main outing if theatre architecture particularly interests you. Add a separate walking allowance if you also want to explore beyond the main structure.

You do not have to fit both sites into one day. One ancient city and an unhurried lunch may suit a family better. To combine them, account for transport between sites, admission arrangements and your return journey. Footwear and the things you need during a long walk call for different preparation from a beach day.

A three-day Antalya itinerary

DayMain routeFlexible element
1Kaleiçi, the Ethnography Museum and coastal surroundingsBreak up the walk with rest and photography stops
2Konyaaltı coastChoose swimming or a shore walk according to conditions
3Perge or AspendosAdd the second site only if transport and energy allow

With two days, choose between the coast day and the excursion according to your interests. A beach holiday may need only a short history visit, while a cultural trip may use the coast mainly for an evening break. Agree on two shared priorities within your group before trying to fill every hour.

Airport transport and where to stay

The airport operator lists city buses and AntRay connections and directs passengers to Antalyakart and the official tram resources for service details. Fraport TAV Antalya Airport Check your terminal, suitable stop and final journey to the hotel together. Reaching the city centre may still leave another connection; think through that final stage particularly for a late arrival.

Let the main purpose of the holiday guide your accommodation choice. A stay focused on Kaleiçi walks may benefit from a different location from one built around daily beach time. Compare transport costs, luggage access and parking needs as well as the room rate. Look at the actual coastal access you will use rather than choosing solely by a hotel's apparent distance from the sea.

What to try at a meal stop

Tahini piyaz, tahini pumpkin dessert, hibeş and bitter-orange preserves feature among the regional foods highlighted by the municipality. Antalya Büyükşehir Belediyesi Add one or two to a meal along your day's route. Ask about ingredients and preparation rather than inferring everything from a dish name, especially when allergies or dietary preferences matter.

The Stork's route notebook: coast, streets or ancient cities?

Only two days: Give the first to Kaleiçi, then choose between the Konyaaltı coast and an ancient-city outing. Sharing a clear priority usually makes a better day than giving everyone a hurried fragment of two different experiences.

For photography: Begin with a whole Kaleiçi street, then move closer to doors, windows and stone details. At the harbour, add a wider relationship between water, boats and the city. Remember the walk back uphill when deciding how much energy to save for the final photograph.

With children: Choose one museum object, one street detail and one proper break. For Perge or Aspendos, scale the visit to age and interest. The combined journey, admission and walking time matters more than a short distance on the map.

Let food become part of the journey

There is no need to turn tahini piyaz and pumpkin dessert into another checklist. Find the natural lunch stop in your walk, then make room for one local dish. A later pause can focus on something sweet. Asking how hibeş is prepared may turn a quick order into a conversation about the local kitchen. In the Stork's notebook, food is another way into a city, not merely the space between attractions.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Antalya Museum missing from the itinerary?

Its official visitor status was closed at the check date. The itinerary should be updated once reopening is confirmed.

Is all of Perge closed?

No. The official closure note concerns the theatre. Distinguish access to the whole site from access to an individual structure.

Do I need to hire a car for three days?

Your accommodation and out-of-town plans determine that. Compare the daily transport connections before deciding whether a car will be useful.
