Let us approach İzmir with the Stork's curiosity: first the close-knit streets of Kemeraltı, then the open space of the bay. Rather than seeing everything in one day, try the city's two different rhythms. Konak, the bazaar and the Agora build the first day's story; the Historic Elevator, Kordon and Alsancak give the second room to breathe. For day three, shall we stay a little longer or venture to Ephesus?
This İzmir travel guide concentrates on the city. Adding every resort in the province would spend the hours you wanted by the water on travelling instead. Choose the two things that excite you most: markets, food, archaeology or walking. I will build the rest of the route around them.
Konak, Kemeraltı and the Agora
Follow a thread through Kemeraltı
Kemeraltı is the historic commercial area in Konak extending from the Clock Tower direction towards the Agora, with traditional trades and religious buildings within its fabric. Visit İzmir Save a starting and finishing point, then choose the streets between them according to your interests. This gives you time to notice daily life as well as shopping.

Put a coffee or lunch break in the middle of the walk. Instead of entering every shop, pick a subject such as crafts, food, courtyards or street architecture. Ask before photographing traders, and keep narrow passages clear during longer stops. Agree on a recognisable meeting point if your group splits up.
Smyrna Agora: another layer of urban life
The Agora in Konak was a centre of administration, commerce and social life in Hellenistic and Roman Smyrna; a substantial part of its remains dates from the second century AD. Müze Türkiye Visiting after the bazaar lets you compare different periods of public life within the same city.

Learn which sections are open before entering. Look at the layout as a whole before concentrating on an individual architectural detail. Avoid leaving an outdoor archaeological visit until you are already tired at the end of the day. If you want a long site visit, make the shopping part shorter.
The Historic Elevator, Kordon and the opposite shore
Tarihi Asansör and Dario Moreno Street
The Historic Elevator dates from 1907 and connects the lower streets with the hillside; Dario Moreno Street is another nearby stop. Visit İzmir Treat this part of the day as a viewpoint and a short neighbourhood walk. For photographs, consider the street perspective below and then the relationship between city and bay from above.
The presence of a lift does not establish that your entire route is step-free. Assess the journey from your accommodation to the entrance and onwards to the next stop separately. If access requirements matter, check operation and alternative routes in advance. Use transport for longer connections rather than feeling obliged to walk every part of the coast.
Slow down around Kordon and Alsancak
Kordon provides a framework for a shore walk towards Alsancak, with Gündoğdu Square along the route. Visit İzmir Give it time in its own right: sit for a while, read or take a short photography walk rather than treating it only as the space between attractions.

Let the weather and your energy determine the distance. Planning dinner in the same general area avoids spending your rest time on another journey. If you also want to see the opposite shore, treat Karşıyaka's bazaar and waterfront as a separate neighbourhood visit and check outward and return connections for that day.
A three-day İzmir itinerary
| Day | Main route | Flexible choice |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Konak, Kemeraltı and the Agora | Give more time to the bazaar or archaeology according to your interests |
| 2 | Historic Elevator surroundings, Kordon and Alsancak | Plan a separate connection to Karşıyaka if time allows |
| 3 | Free city day or an Ephesus excursion | Build the out-of-town day around one main destination |
For a single day, Konak, a short Kemeraltı walk and a coastal break make a useful introduction. With two days, keep the pace comfortable without adding an excursion. Giving the third day to Ephesus does not mean you must also finish every remaining city attraction that evening; leave something for another visit.
Plan Ephesus as a separate day
UNESCO-listed Ephesus is a historic settlement landscape in the Selçuk area, with the Library of Celsus and Great Theatre among its Roman monuments. It is distinct from the Agora in central İzmir. UNESCO Include the outward and return journeys when deciding whether to devote your third day to it.
Establish which entrance you will use, where you will leave the site and how you will return to your accommodation. Read the ticket coverage for the sections you want to see. Add nearby places only once the main visit has enough time; trying to cover the entire surrounding area reduces the experience at the site itself.
Getting from Adnan Menderes Airport
DHMİ lists İZBAN rail access, ESHOT buses, Havaş coaches and taxis, with directions from the terminals to the rail station. DHMİ Check whether the journey to your hotel needs another connection or a walk after İZBAN. The rail lines shown on a city map should not be treated as a single direct service to every destination.
Save the stop name, direction and final walking section before arrival. For the return, separate the time you need at the airport from waiting for your train or bus. For a late arrival, check the actual connection instead of assuming the daytime service pattern continues overnight.
What to eat and how to choose a base
Boyoz, gevrek, İzmir kumru and şambali are a few introductions to local food. The registered İzmir kumru is described as a cold sandwich with tulum cheese, tomato and pepper; not every menu item called kumru follows that preparation. Visit İzmir Choose a couple of small tastings at breakfast or along your walk to make food part of the day's natural rhythm.

Do not build the entire food budget around the price of one famous item. Drinks, seated meals and smaller snacks also add up. Ask the seller about ingredients and allergens rather than treating somebody else's good experience as a guarantee that a dish meets your dietary needs.
Choose accommodation around the focus of your trip. For historic-centre days, compare access to those sights; for coastal evenings, look at the journey home. Go beyond the neighbourhood name and assess nearby stops, luggage access, room arrangements and your final departure-day connection.
The Stork's route notebook: give İzmir time
One day: Start in Konak and follow a short thread through Kemeraltı. Make space for the Agora if archaeology is a priority, then finish with a coastal break. Leave Ephesus for a separate visit so that the centre gets meaningful time.
Two days: Follow a first day of markets and the ancient city with a change of pace. Move from the streets around the Historic Elevator to the viewpoint, then towards Kordon. If you add Karşıyaka, include the return journey so the evening does not become an exercise in watching the clock.
A food-focused visit: Build breakfast around boyoz or gevrek and leave a bazaar pause for a small taste of şambali. When ordering kumru, ask which preparation is offered. Several small discoveries across the day can be more enjoyable than trying to fit the entire city into one meal.
Three different İzmir photographs
Make the first picture intimate: a courtyard, shopfront or line through a bazaar street. Use the second to explore the relationship between city and hillside around the Historic Elevator. Let the last open out along Kordon. The album then has variety rather than repeated views of the same scene. Ask before photographing people and keep shop entrances clear.
Frequently asked questions
Are three days enough for İzmir?
They can provide two days in the centre and one focused excursion. Adding all the province's resort areas would make the itinerary unnecessarily crowded.
Are the Agora and Ephesus the same outing?
No. Include the Agora in the central route and Ephesus in a separate excursion with its own transport plan.
Is there a direct airport metro to everywhere?
Plan the airport rail connection as İZBAN, then check any transfer and final walk for your destination.
