This itinerary uses Xenia, Ohio as a base for a visit to nearby Wilberforce and Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument. Its visitor center is the historic house known as Youngsholm. The house is not in downtown Xenia, so distinguish your accommodation address from the actual museum entrance. Choose an operating day before setting out and leave time for the exhibitions. The photographs come from the NPS archive following the 2024 refurbishment; they are not a promise that every room will have an identical display or unrestricted access on your travel date.

Choose the visit day first

The visitor-center schedule displayed in the official NPS hours page lists Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 4 pm, with Monday through Thursday closed. These hours were checked in the live browser section rather than inferred from the page's older update date. Its listed holiday exceptions include closure on Thanksgiving, November 26, 2026, Christmas Day, December 25, 2026, and New Year's Day, January 1, 2027. Falling on a normally open weekday does not override a special closure. Before a substantial journey, call 937-352-6757 to confirm the date and any changes; do not assume that staff will provide a private group tour without arranging it.

Admission is free and an entrance pass is not required for this monument. That does not mean the house interior can be entered at any hour. References in the directions page to outdoor historical markers should be distinguished from the operating schedule of the exhibition rooms. If seeing the interior matters, aim for daylight comfortably within the published opening period. A morning start in this guide is a planning suggestion, not a booked appointment or an official tour time. Contact the park separately about organized activities and school-group arrangements rather than arrive expecting a program to begin on demand.

Getting from Xenia to the house

Use the physical visitor address, 1120 US Route 42 East, Wilberforce, rather than the park's postal box. From Dayton, the NPS directions follow US 35 east toward Xenia, then US 35 Business / West Main Street, with a left turn onto US 42. The house is approximately 2.5 miles from that intersection on the left. From the east, the described approach leaves US 35 west at North Bickett Road, turns right, then left onto US 42; the final connection is approximately 0.7 mile. Check current signs and a travel-day map because road works can change the practical approach. No guaranteed driving time is offered here.

A road connection is not evidence of a continuous sidewalk or protected cycle route from town to the house. Without a vehicle, arrange both the outward and return journeys in advance rather than depend on an unverified bus service. Drivers should follow entrance signs and avoid stopping abruptly beside the highway for photographs. In wet or cold weather, allow for the movement from the vehicle to the entrance and any waiting. If you need assistance, step-free entry or another accessibility arrangement, describe that particular requirement to the park before traveling. A photograph of a porch is not a reliable access assessment.

A useful way to read the exhibitions

Treat Youngsholm as an opportunity to connect one biography with military and social history. According to the NPS account, Charles Young became the third African American graduate of West Point in 1889. His 1894 teaching assignment in Wilberforce strengthened his connection to the area. In 1903 his work at Sequoia made him the first African American national park superintendent, and he was posthumously promoted to brigadier general in 2021. Keeping a few milestones in mind helps connect the service, family and park-related displays without turning the visit into a memorization exercise.

The park's introductory film runs for approximately ten minutes and can provide a framework before you examine the panels. Watching it first, then comparing the themes of service, national parks and family life, offers a manageable sequence. One possible question to bring to a staff conversation is how the exhibitions present Young's professional achievements alongside the racial discrimination he faced. You do not need to read every label in a single sitting. Families can select one photograph or map and invite children to explain what they notice in their own words. The archived panel photographs illustrate earlier interpretation, not a guaranteed present-day exhibition inventory.

Keep the day comfortable

This itinerary is not a long backcountry walking plan. Time inside the house, a pause to look at the facade, and a return to Xenia for a meal can make a complete day. Visitors with mobility restrictions should ask which floors and rooms are accessible rather than make assumptions from an entrance photograph. The conditions page's weather widget did not supply a detailed forecast during the check, so this guide makes no claim of dry roads, clear skies or every service being open. Check actual weather and traffic shortly before leaving, and adapt the order if conditions make outdoor waiting uncomfortable.

Nearby university campuses and other cultural institutions are separate destinations with their own rules and hours. They are not automatically included in the monument's admission arrangements. If adding another museum, check its own operating day before linking the two visits. A focused Youngsholm visit and an unhurried meal are a reasonable alternative to filling the day with unrelated stops. Observe property boundaries, staff instructions and traffic safety while looking at outdoor markers. When taking photographs, keep other visitors' views clear and avoid resting belongings on exhibition surfaces. An old bookstore photograph does not establish current stock or opening arrangements.

A real place to stay and a main meal

Hampton Inn & Suites Xenia Dayton at 194 South Progress Drive is an accommodation option. Its official page lists check-in at 3 pm, check-out at 11 am, and complimentary hot breakfast, Wi-Fi and parking. Airport shuttle service is listed as unavailable for Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus. Booking a room therefore does not solve the airport-transfer part of the trip. Different nearby-distance descriptions appear on the property page, so this guide does not repeat an exact city-center mileage. Read the cancellation conditions and any additional charges attached to your particular room rate before paying.

Nick's Restaurant at 1443 North Detroit Street in Xenia offers a documented main-meal choice: the Big Nick burger is named in the restaurant's own introduction. Ask for the current ingredients and sides when ordering rather than rely on an invented recipe or portion claim. Published kitchen hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 11 am to 10 pm, Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 11 pm, and Sunday from 11 am to 9 pm. Later bar hours do not mean the kitchen serves until the same time. Monday is not listed in that schedule; confirm at 937-372-3202 instead of inferring closure. An open Youngsholm day, arranged transport and a meal timed to actual kitchen service are the practical foundations of this outing.
